Russian Screen & Printer Fonts for this Site (Mac OS)

Most modern computers come with Cyrillic fonts already installed, but to use this site you must download and install our free fonts because they include accented Russian vowels (for marking primary and secondary word stress) that are not included in standard fonts. Download a compressed font archive by clicking a link below. Your browser may ask where you want to save the archive. Select a convenient location on your computer, e.g. Desktop. Uncompress the archive and install the fonts. Then configure your browser to use them for the Unicode (UTF-8), Cyrillic and User Defined encodings. Step-by-step directions are below. See a note about Safari below.

The directions below were written for a few the browsers, they apply to other browsers as well, although the terminology may vary.

  1. click this link to download and save the compressed Accented Cyrillic font archive; note where you save it, e.g. the Desktop
  2. find the archive on your computer and double-click it to open the font file in Font Book
  3. click Install Font in the Font Book window; you should now see Accented Cyrillic in the font list
  4. tell your browser to use our font for the Unicode (UTF-8), Cyrillic, and User-Defined encodings (aka character sets or code pages):

You may use our font with any browser for Mac OS X, but you will get better results with Firefox, Mozilla, or Opera and Camino. The reason for this is that our font includes accented vowels, which are not part of any standard encoding and can best be used with the User Defined encoding. The current version of Safari is the only Mac OS browser that does not support the User Defined encoding. With Safari, you won't see accented vowels in the Russian texts.
