Я родилась в стране, которой нет на карте, в городе, которого тоже больше нет на карте. I was born in a country that isn't on the map, and in a city that is also no longer on the map.
Всю жизнь я очень любила книги. Я люблю читать книги, я люблю смотреть на книги, я люблю просто держать книги в руках и перелистывать их. Может быть поэтому, когда я жила в Ленинграде (как вы, конечно, догадались) у меня была довольно редкая и странная профессия — оценщик антикварных книг. Я держала в руках книги, изданные при Петре I и Екатерине II и читала, читала, читала... All my life I've loved books. I love reading books, I love looking at books, and I love holding books in my hands and turning their pages. Maybe that's why, when I lived in Leningrad (as I'm sure you've already guessed), I had a relatively unusual and strange profession—I appraised antiquarian books. I would hold in my hands books published in the reign of Peter the Great and Catherine the Great. And I read, and read, and read...
Когда меня спрашивают, почему я уехала из Советского Союза, я отвечаю: потому что я прочитала все книги, написанные по-русски. Может быть я прочитаю теперь все книги, написанные по-английски и уеду во Францию — если успею; я уже совсем не молодая. When people ask me why I left the Soviet Union, I tell them that I had read every last book written in Russian. If I end up reading all the books written in English, then I'll move to France. But that isn't likely to happen; I'm not a young woman anymore.
Преподавать русский язык (и писать книги для студентов) я начала только в Корнелле, когда мы со Славой и Максом, нашим сыном, приехали в Итаку. Я сразу поняла, что это еще интереснее, чем оценивать антикварные книги. Тогда же я начала учить английский, но даже сейчас, много лет спустя, я говорю по-английски хуже, чем мои студенты говорят по-русски. I started teaching Russian (and writing books for students) at Cornell, when Slava, our son Maxim, and I came to Ithaca. I quickly realized that this was even more interesting than appraising antiquarian books. I started studying English at the same time, but even now, many years later, my English is far worse than my students' Russian.
Мои лучшие друзья — это мои студенты (если не считать моей собаки). Я очень люблю с ними разговаривать, люблю их слушать, люблю у них учиться: у молодых людей всегда есть новые и интересные идеи, которые у немолодых бывают гораздо реже. My students are my best friends, if you don't count my dog. I love talking to them, love listening to them, and I love learning from them. Young people always have new and interesting ideas. Older people rarely do.
В отличие от Славы, я не увлекаюсь компьютерами, не снимаю фильмов и не меняю так часто прическу. Я предпочитаю читать, писать или гулять со своей собакой, которую тоже мало интересуют компьютеры (как, впрочем, и книги). Unlike Slava, I don't dabble in computers, nor do I shoot films or change my hair style all the time. I'd rather read, write, or go for walks with my dog, who also shows little interest in computers (or, for that matter, books).
Дома мы со Славой и Максом говорим по-русски, но с моей собакой я всегда говорю по-английски, потому что она никогда не исправляет моих ошибок. At home, Slava, Maxim, and I speak Russian, but I always speak English to my dog. After all, she never corrects my mistakes.

Lora Paperno is the author of the multimedia site Lora's Dialogs and the co-editor of «Что я видел» that are used in our first-year course (as well as other publications). She taught in the program for more than twenty years.
